The Internet is a convenient tool that has made life easier for a lot of people in the world, including those from Milwaukee. Although it is convenient, the Internet is also a means for criminals to conduct misdeeds. Because of this, law enforcers are exerting efforts in the difficult task of cracking down on those who commit cyberstalking, child enticement or any unlawful use of a computer to facilitate a sex crime.
Take into account a recent incident regarding a Mequon man. The Menomonee Falls business owner was accused of possessing child pornography after authorities claimed to have found images on his computer. As a result, he was charged with seven felony counts.
Reports say that authorities received multiple tips from anonymous sources that child pornography was discovered on the accused man’s computer. Law enforcement officers carried out a search warrant at the defendant’s business establishment, where they allegedly found the pornographic images of the children.
In some cases involving possession or distribution of child pornography, authorities ensnare innocent people who have committed no such crimes. Here is a simple reminder to Milwaukee readers: information stored on a work computer can be added by anyone who has access to that computer. In such cases, it is difficult to prove who stored the pornographic materials in the computer’s memory. Despite this possibility, a defendant could still face severe consequences, often including fines, jail time and even public humiliation.
To prevent or at least diminish these troubles, residents accused of Internet crimes are advised to think about their legal options. It may be a good idea to consult legal counsel who can determine what options are available to the accused. A capable defense lawyer might be able to develop a solid strategy to clear both the name and the record of those who are accused of such crimes.
