‘The sexting talk’: A tricky but important conversation

Today’s digital world has created some unique concerns for parents of teens. This includes concerns regarding teen sexting.

Sexting is rather prevalent among today’s teens. Such conduct can have all kinds of significant negative impacts on a teen and their life.

Many parents understand that, given these things, talking with their kids about sexting and its dangers can be incredibly important. However, parents may not be sure about when and how to talk about this topic with their kid. Such talks can, after all, touch on some rather delicate and uncomfortable subjects.

A recent article on CNN’s website went over some tips for parents when it comes to having “the sexting talk.” Among the things it recommended for talking to one’s teens about sexting were:

  • Going over the consequences of sexting.
  • Going over what their teen should do if they receive an inappropriate picture or message.
  • Talking about the pressures their teen could face to sext and how to respond to these pressures.
  • Being proactive in the timing of such a conversation, rather than just waiting to have this talk until after a possible problem comes up.

What tips would you give for having this delicate conversation with one’s kids?

Another thing parents might be unsure of when it comes to teen sexting is what to do if their teen is accused of this conduct.
